FREE TO PLAY TIPS: What hat’s best for your crab?
TL;DR speed hats for
small crabs, your best damage modifying hats for your fat crabs.
You may have noticed
that in King of Crabs, your crabs get to wear hats. And, as much as you may
want to don the rarest hat in your collection, or the most attractive one that
appeals to your aesthetic sensibilities, the truth is, these hats can have a
profound impact on gameplay – so for the best* experience, you should not be
picking your hats flippantly.
Best* = dying the least
number of times.
Thankfully, if you can’t
for the life of you figure out what hat goes best with your crab, there’s this
neat guide to help with your selection.
In the game, there’s
only two responses to any engagement: that is to fight or take flight. No
matter how stacked your small crabs are (i.e. anything under the Super Rare
category), you will not win in a straight up fight with the big crabs, smol
crabs are simply that weak. Conversely, if you’re running a fat crab, be ready
to brawl your way into attrition because you can (and thus should). So, throw
away your thinking hats because the solution is simple:
Common Crabs: Use speed hats
Use whichever is
stronger. You are small and nimble. Make use of this to dodge unwinnable fights
and escape hot pursuits by weaving in and out of AI crabs and terrain.
Rare Crabs: Use speed hats
In this category, there
are still more crabs that are stronger than you, so the ability to flee a scene
is more important than standing your ground. Again, use whichever hat you have
that is stronger.
Super Rare Crabs: Use damage modifying hats
If your damage hats are
strong enough, go with them, because as a super rare crab, you should be able
to hold your own even against the mega rare crabs. Otherwise, run the speed
hats until your damage hats are worth wearing.
Mega Rare Crabs: Use damage modifying hats
Samurai helmet, ALWAYS,
unless it’s woefully under-levelled and you have the Viking helmet or voodoo
skull at level 3. Otherwise, there is no contest. The Samurai helmet is
objectively the best helmet you can don in game. If all crabs attack at the
same rate, any modifier that increases your chance at scoring a critical hit
will always be valued higher than a modifier to your base damage.
Honourable Mentions
If you’re new to the
game, the pizza hat is probably one of the few hats that’s available to you
from the get-go. If your crab’s starting out at under 30% (size), you may
consider picking this (or Uncle Sam). Remaining small is the bane of all crabs
and players, and the less time you spend that way, the better.
Maybe it’s a nod to the
developers, Robot Squid, but the squid hat is unique enough to warrant a
mention. An XP boost is valuable if you’re trying to beat the grind and climb
the progression tree to a Crab Emperor. Not something any healthy gamer should
aspire to, but hey, to each his own.
